3 Skills Needed to Harness Big Data

Let’s start with this statement from the Global Technology Report of 2014. It predicted big data as “a new form of asset class. Data are now the equivalent of oil or gold. And today we are seeing a data boom rivalling the Texas oil boom of the 20th century and the San Francisco gold rush of the 1800s.”

Big data, it’s no small business! Organisations continue to recognize the power and potential of it. They are gaining a handful of benefits out of it.

As data science and analytics is becoming increasingly popular, there are many professionals who make a career shift to harness big data. So, if you are someone in the group, here’s 3 major skills to possess, for a bright career in data analytics.

Programming

On an ideal note, coding skills are essential to harness the power of big data. Programming skills are integral to conduct numerical and statistical analysis of large sets of data.

If you have experience in working with languages like R, Python, Java etc. it will be greatly helpful in your career as a big data analyst.  You need to take advantage of various tools as demanded by your job requirements. Once you are well-versed with one of these statistical and scripting languages, learning the rest won’t be difficult.

Data Interpretation

Big data analytics is all about examining large and varied sets of data using advanced data analytic techniques. So that you can take data-driven decisions and thereby gain a competitive advantage in the market.

The process of data analytics includes data collection with innovative data mining techniques, data warehousing, data transformation and data analysis using tools like Hadoop, Cloudera etc. You are supposed to master the skills to interpret data and make it useful with relevance to the business as a big data analyst.

Domain knowledge

Here’s the most relevant point. If you don’t possess considerable knowledge about the domain you are working in, your knowledge in big data analytics and technology will be hardly used properly. Hence, knowledge about the industry is considered to be an essential skill to harness the power of big data.

The best way to learn more about big data would be enrolling into one of the big data certification course. You can take advantage of the online data analytics course, prior to starting a career in big data.
